Noah and Zay had their Raingutter regatta in November. Leslie had to go out of town for the day so Cecil, Connor, and I took them.
The boys built the boats at scouts the week before, decorated them with Leslie a few days before and Cecil set up a practice rain gutter for them to practice on in our garage the day of. Zay really wanted to practice, but Noah wanted to come inside and told me 'Its not about winning or losing - its about having fun.'
He is so competitive. #sarcasm
Last year the rain gutter regatta was inside at the First Methodist Church (home base for their troop and also Connor's school). Unknown to Cecil and I, this year they joined up with another troop and it was OUTSIDE. And it was COLD!
Noah and Zay turned in their boats.
Noah named his Bloody Monster (left) and Zay named his Pirate Colorful (right)
I think ol' Bloody Monster and Pirate Colorful are pretty easy to spot out in the group.
First they lined up did the flag, pledge and scout law.
Last year they used actually rain gutters, not this year - it was this float thing. I will say I think the right side had a definite advantage! Also, they changed it this year where you don't blow on the boat directly, you use a straw. I think the kids that knew this ahead of time had a definite advantage also.
It was a double elimination tournament.
Look at these cuties. We were C.O.L.D.
The boys had to wait for the older kids to go first and Zay took it VERY seriously. I've never seen him stand so still with his hands behind his back.
Then, it was finally Noah's turn. The winner had to win two races and they switched sides each time.
Poor Noah lost the first race.
He was racing against the Scout Master's son who after the first race yelled 'I like my chances.' rude.
Noah ended up losing the first two races. We tried to lift Noah's spirits by showing him an earthworm. He immediately tried to scare his Scout Master with it. haha
Then it was Zay's turn and he was READY!
Unfortunately on the first race his boat goat twisted in the 'gutter'
He accidentally lost the second race also.
At this point we were 0-4 and I was WORRIED. Later, Noah got to race again and poor guy lost again. He was eliminated. :(
Then, Zay was able to race again. He started out behind, but stayed with it and won the first race!
Zay advanced and got to race another kid. And he won AGAIN!
Zay was THRILLED once he started winning. He danced around and sang 'I'm the champion of everything' hahahha I love seeing his confidence grow in scouts.
I told the boys to smile so I could send Leslie a picture and this is what I got.

When I told Noah that he had to look at me and smile I got this gem.
Zay advanced again and got to race another kid
And he won AGAIN. (please note Noah's face - hahahhahah)
Zay lost his next race and I didn't get any pictures ---after awhile they all kind of seemed the same. lol
After everyone was finally done racing, we went inside (Thanks goodness) and everyone got a patch and a few people got prizes. Zay got the award for the FASTEST Tiger OR Wolf from BOTH troops. He got some scout water canteen and was super excited. I was so proud of him because he really did practice and tried hard.
Noah was SALTY. I tried to remind him that he said that "it wasn't about wining or losing- but about having fun." He cried TEARS and said that was before he knew Zay would get a prize and he wouldn't. Maybe he will try harder next year.
